Excerpt from Wikipedia: Pineapple Guava is a species of flowering plant in the myrtle family. It is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and Colombia. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree and for its fruit.
Other common names include feijoa, and guavasteen, although it is not a true guava. It is actually an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 20 ft high.
Size: Up to 8 to 15 feet tall and wide.
Uses: Smoothies, wine, cider, yogurt, jam, ice cream, chutney, baked goods, custard.
Companions: Banana, papaya, guava.
Habitat: Warm to temperate subtropical regions - food source for birds and bees.
Harvest: 4 1/2 to 6 months after flowering in late summer to early winter - ripe fruits will not change in color, but drop to the ground when the plant is shaken.
Fun Fact: Pineapple guava (also known as Feijoa) can survive for more than 45 years in the wild.
